Abstract:
Groups & Representations (organised by Shripad Garge and Sandip Singh)
A conference on ''Groups and Representations'' was organized at the Department of Mathematics, IITB, from July 3 to 8, 2023 by Sandip Singh and Shripad Garge. The aim was to bring active researchers working in and around the topic together and have them exchange their recent research ideas with their peers. To facilitate the discussion among the attendees, the number of daily lectures was kept to a minimum of 5 lectures covering only 4 hours of the day, 2 hours in the morning, and 2 hours in the session after lunch. The speakers were from different parts of the country and were selected so as to represent different aspects of the topic of the conference. Some of the main aspects represented in the conference are the character theory of finite groups, MacDonald polynomials, branching laws of representations, topology of Lie groups, (2, 3)-generation of Chevalley groups, Whittaker models, Jacquet module, word maps, to quote a few. The total number of participants was 41 of which 9 were women. The speakers included 5 Ph.D. students and 8 postdocs. The rest were faculty members from universities and institutions across the nation. The keynote speakers were M. S. Raghunathan, Dipendra Prasad, K. N. Raghavan, and Pralay Chatterjee. We also had a speaker from France, Didier Lesesvre, who happened to be visiting our department at that time.
