Academic (Non-Capital) - Total Funding: 285 Cr.

Under the Scheme an amount of 285 Cr. under the Non-Capital head is allocated to support various outreach activities, collaboration and partnership events, as well as incentives for students which are likely to contribute significantly to increasing the visibility of the Institute globally and help in improving the international ranking.

A1: Outreach & Visibility

Funding: Rs. 35 Cr.

Perception of academic excellence is an important component of ranking, hence it is important to communicate the work being done in the Institute to professional peers in a variety of ways.

IIT Bombay engages with the outside world to effectively execute its stated mission as well as its activities. Through such an engagement the Institute hopes to understand needs and issues as well as to inform, educate and share best practices. This also helps to build perspective and awareness among faculty and students and is a source of creativity and innovation. The engagement makes research and teaching more relevant and often results in direct benefits to society.

A2: Collaboration and Partnership

Funding: Rs. 55 Cr.

IIT Bombay has over the years worked to successfully build strong links with several international universities. The primary motivations have been the following:

  • Synergy through the optimum use of human resources and research facilities.
  • To enable critical mass in Thrust Areas through faculty exchanges.

  • Broaden faculty and student horizons through exchanges.

Interactions with international universities and attracting international students to study at the Institute are recognised to contribute to the mission of IIT Bombay.

A3: Student Incentives

Funding: Rs. 45 Cr.

Incentives are provided to encourage students to achieve academic excellence and promote personal growth. Additionally, support is offered for the incubation and initiation of startups. The assistance extends to international conference participation, Student exchange programs, and research related translational activities.

B2: PDFs

Funding: Rs. 136 Cr.

Postdoctoral training serves as a means to foster academic growth and enhance career prospects for individuals who have successfully earned a doctoral degree. This training is carried out under the guidance of one or more professors who are faculty members with expertise in the specific field of interest. The primary role of these faculty members is to act as mentors, providing guidance to postdoctoral candidates in terms of career development and navigating the external job market.

Postdoctoral Fellows are anticipated to engage in supervised research, preferably through collaborative efforts, compose grant and research proposals, and effectively present their research findings, ultimately resulting in the creation of high-quality publications. Beyond research acumen, it is of paramount importance for postdoctoral fellows to attain proficiency in various other professional skills that are instrumental in forging a successful career.

While responsibilities beyond research, such as teaching or coordinating conferences, academic workshops, and seminars, are typically limited in scope, these activities can still be pursued in alignment with the specific training goals of postdoctoral fellows and in consultation with the department's administration.

IoE scheme has taken this aspect into consideration with the required importance. We have allocated an amount of Rs. 136 Cr. towards this activity and as of 30th June IIT Bombay has 263 PDFs on its role.
