ESED: Landfill Fire: Research undertaken and critical R&D area

Abstract:

The estimated MSW generation is 86 million tonnes of MSW per year, out of which 43 million tonnes (70 %) are collected, 12 million tonnes are treated, and 31 million tonnes are landfilled/openly dumped. Landfill management in India encounters several significant challenges, in which landfill fires stand out as a crucial problem due to their high ambient temperatures. To tackle this issue, robust research and development is necessary. There are many areas to work on, such as investigating the thermal decomposition of waste, linking evolved gas data to combustion chemistry, predicting the rate of spread of flames, and early detection and mitigation efforts. The talk will dive deep into the topic to bring awareness to these research areas.
