Introduction:
IIT Bombay has a large and active community of researchers who require high-performance computing facilities for pursuing cutting-edge research. Research groups relying on HPC for their research span almost all departments and address a diverse range of subjects from basic research as well as practical applications. To name a few in this regard are medical image computing, lithium-ion batteries, transportation networks, epidemiology, climate change risks, effects of aerosols, seismic risk assessment, molecular magnets, safe reactor operations, protein folding, enzyme structures, catalysis, cancer cell invasion, turbulence in high-speed flights, biofuels, animating hybrid phenomena, artificial intelligence, material physics, machine learning, etc.
Under IoE Scheme, it is proposed to fund the setting up of State-of-the-art HPC. We have earmarked an amount of Rs. 35 Cr. towards HPC.
The HPC center will augment and enhance the research capabilities of more than 200 research groups headed by full time IIT Bombay faculty members, benefits of which readily pervades to 1000 research students. This facility is aimed to boost on-going research in several areas of societal impact ranging from weather, climate studies, catalysis, bio-informatics and drug development research, space technology, and industrial manufacturing to name a few. The new proposed facility will put IIT Bombay on par with top global universities and would be a perfect fit to the concept of "world-class research laboratory"
The funding will be used mainly for the procurement of 2 Petaflops (PFLOPS) Supercomputer for the computing needs of the academic community. In the rest of this proposal we wish to justify the need of the above, based on current and future work requiring high performance computing being done at IIT Bombay. We believe that such a facility will help bring IIT Bombay closer to facilities of International standards, thus improving its position in Global University rankings.
